简介:With a few shots, Denis Cointe introduces us to a luxurious garden plunged in deep silence, quickly interrupted by some fragile notes mixed in with the birdsongs. Like an interior music, these sounds accompany a long fixed shot showing us a woman in a wheelchair, her hand wrapped in a handkerchief. When a car rushes past in the background, the sound of the motor reconfigures what we hear. Suddenly we are reminded of the first shots, that showed us the setting and the loudspeakers scattered through the green microcosm. They enable us to listen to sound pieces created by contemporary composers (Alessandro Bossetti, Felix Blum…). Barail proceeds in fixed shots within this garden, showing us its inhabitants one by one : people with heavy handicaps, listening. The shots, with their frontal framing and extended running time, make the screen into a mirror, setting up a “face to face” with the audience and bringing us back to these residents’ extreme fragility. A plane’s deafning roar once again breaks up the soundscape and the landscape’s quiet. It signales the outside world’s brutality and underlines, as a counterpoint, the delicacy of this sheltered setting, whose occupants live in harmony with nature and blossom among the flowers. Captivated by movements within these sonic landscapes – in one of them, a jingle of bells suggests a flock of goats in the garden’s vicinity – we scan their faces for the slightest sign of pleasure, happinesse, or preference. Thus, rather than a simple contemplation, Barail asks us to share in to the listening with them, to experience it, to adjust our gaze by sharpening our ear, and calls for us what the garden and its inhabitants also require : our attention. A photo album plunges us back into childood memories. Barail, the name of this garden of Eden, is the ideal refuge for vulnerable existences exising outside of langage, from plants to the children we all were once.
